Craig Sims, Former Chief of Criminal Division at the Seattle City Attorney’s Office, Joins Bergman Draper Ladenburg

mesothelioma firm lawyerSEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Craig Sims, former Chief of the Criminal Division at the Seattle City Attorney’s Office, has joined the law firm of Bergman Draper Ladenburg, a nationally recognized leader in asbestos litigation. In his new role, Sims will represent families who are victims of mesothelioma, a highly aggressive form of cancer caused by inhalation of asbestos fibers. Most cases of mesothelioma occurred because companies using the material failed to protect customers and employees from the risks of exposure.

“Craig’s distinguished record of public service and jury trial experience will expand our capabilities to represent clients throughout the Northwest,” said Matthew Bergman, founding partner, Bergman Draper Ladenburg. “Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases are preventable. Craig’s experienced advocacy on behalf of victims will ensure that companies that fail to provide proper safety and health measures are held accountable for their negligence.”

Prior to joining the Seattle City Attorney’s Office, Sims worked in a private practice litigating dozens of cases on behalf of victims with serious personal injuries. He also served as a Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney with the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, successfully representing citizens in more than 100 trials during a ten-year period. While at the County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Craig was invited to join the prestigious Most Dangerous Offender Unit. While in this unit, Craig served as co-counsel on the trial of State v. William Joice. Joice, a former Snohomish County deputy prosecutor, was convicted of attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of his opposing counsel.

A Passion for Justice

Sims said his commitment to serving people facing difficult challenges came from his father, a pastor, who set an example in providing compassionate counsel. “I saw the importance of treating people with dignity and empathy,” Sims said. “The challenges of mesothelioma cases are not just realized in the courtroom. There is physical and emotional stress related to the disease and treatment, as well as significant financial burdens. I am honored to have the opportunity to work closely with clients to ensure they receive the treatment they need and fair compensation for them and their families.”

Sims has held leadership positions in several professional organizations, including the Loren Miller Bar Association (2009-2012) and the King County Bar Association (2009-2012). His contributions to the legal community have been recognized with the following awards: Excellence in Practice, Loren Miller Bar Association (2013); Mentor of the Year, King County Bar Association (2013); Professionalism Award, Washington State Bar Association (2011).

Sims received his undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon and his J.D. from the Seattle University School of Law. He is licensed to practice law in Washington and the United States Federal Court, Western District of Washington.
